According to Crime Branch sleuths, Padsalgikar used his experience in the Intelligence Bureau, where he was formerly a special director, to track Pillai’s whereabouts, and the gangster was finally apprehended in another raid by the authorities in Singapore. Officials claimed that Pillai’s identity was matched from the fingerprints in Mumbai Police’s records earlier this week.Pillai, officials said, had a close association with the LTTE and he was suspected to be holed up in the UK, Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka or Singapore, which have a sizeable Tamil population. Pillai’s stronghold used to be Vikhroli, where he mostly operated in the construction industry. On October 25 last year, wanted fugitive Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje alias Chhota Rajan was nabbed in Bali and is in the custody of the CBI. Pillai even reportedly escaped a raid in Singapore. India has sought the extradition of a man arrested in Singapore who is said to have had links with the LTTE, the Indian Express reported.Senior officials in the Mumbai Police have claimed that it was the resources of new Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar that helped the Singapore authorities nab wanted fugitive Kumar Pillai in a raid two weeks ago. “Fugitive Kumar Krushna Pillai was detained by Singapore authorities a couple of weeks ago on our Red Corner Notice. There are five serious cases registered against him. We have sent out extradition proposal to them (Singapore officials) and we are fulfilling all requirements… It is a protracted process which will take time to reach some definite stage,” said Mumbai Police spokesperson Dhananjay Kulkarni.
