Street race fatal accident…other driver fined for traffic offencesThe drunk driver, who was involved in a street race with another motor vehicle and crashed into a fence at De Kinderen Village, West Coast Demerara (WCD)— leading to the death of his 25-year-old passenger, Leroy Cummings—faced several charges in relation to the incident and was released on $800,000 bail.Totaram Munishwar, 23, of the Tuschen Village, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Wales Magistrates’ Court, West Bank Demerara (WBD), on Thursday to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.He denied the charge and was released on $800,000 bail.Munishwar is expected to return to Court on November 14.Prior to the causing death by dangerous driving charge, Munishwar, along with the other driver whom he had been allegedly racing with along the WCD roadways when the accident occurred, appeared at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court, WCD on Wednesday to answer to the charges of various traffic offences.Munishwar and his friend, 20-year-old Saeed Alli, of Lot 1179 Tuschen, EBE, both appeared before Magistrate Zorina Ally-Seepaul.Alli was fined for each offence committed, which, if not paid, would have lead him to face time in jail. He paid the fines.Reports are around 00:30h on Monday, the now dead man, Leroy Cummings, along with his younger brother and their friend were in the vehicle, PMM 4818, driven by Munishwar. Initially, Alli was driving behind Munishwar.The two drivers reportedly began to race to determine who would be faster in reaching their next destination (all of the individuals reside in Tuschen Village). However, as they approached a turn, Munishwar allegedly attempted to overtake his friend’s vehicle while another vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction.This led to Munishwar swerving but in doing so, he lost control of his vehicle, which turned turtle and ended up crashing into a fence.A Police source stated that the driver and occupants from PVV 4886 were immediately pulled out of the mangled car and then rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, WCD.However, Cummings had arrived there in an unconscious state and due to his serious condition at that time, he was referred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH). He died during the transfer to WDRH.At the time of the accident, both drivers were tested for alcohol and results revealed that their levels were above the legal limit.
