Miffed with the CPI(M), the West Bengal Congress on Wednesday said there will be no seat sharing with the CPI(M) by compromising party’s dignity and gave an ultimatum to the Left Front to take a call on the tie-up by this Sunday. The Congress convened a meeting of its State election committee, which was chaired by Congress in-charge of Bengal Gaurav Gogoi, to decide on election strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. State Congress sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it has been decided that chairman of the State co-ordination committee Pradip Bhattacharya and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Abdul Mannan will speak to CPI(M) on the issue of the seat sharing and the matter should be sorted out by March 3.
Union ministers and civil society representatives in the Lokpal Bill joint drafting committee will meet on Monday in a last ditch effort to resolve contentious issues in the proposed anti-corruption legislation. The meeting comes amidst the persisting deadlock between the two sides and will be the eighth since April 16.If the discussions are not concluded on Monday, another round of talks is likely on Tuesday.Ahead of the meeting, senior ministers held discussions for nearly three hours on Sunday to finetune the government’s strategy. The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister and drafting committee chairman Pranab Mukherjee and attended by members Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid and Veerappa Moily.N. Narayanaswamy, Minister of State in PMO, also attended the meeting. Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who is another committee member, was not present.Key issuesSeveral issues have kept the government and civil society camps divided. Both are at loggerheads on whether to bring the prime minister and judiciary under the purview of the proposed Lokpal Bill. While the government has virtually ruled out bringing the post of prime minister under the Lokpal, Anna Hazare’s camp remains adamant on it. The Congress Core Group has favoured convening an all-party meet on the issue.Another bone of contention is the conduct of MPs inside Parliament. The government has maintained that this is not possible in the proposed legislation as it would amount to amending the Constitution.Hegde backs HazareMeanwhile, Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde, a member of the drafting committee, denied any split in the Hazare camp and said he will attend the meeting.advertisementHegde also backed Hazare’s planned fast from August 16. Hegde’s earlier comments on Hazare’s fast and absence from meetings had fuelled speculation of differences among the civil society representatives.- With PTI inputsFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.
It doesn’t get any bigger than this! Or does it? Actually, it does if you imagine India and Pakistan slugging it out against each other for the World Cup 2019 trophy on July 14th at Lord’s. But for now, the encounter on June 16 at Old Trafford promises to be another exciting chapter in the history of arguably the most popular rivalry in the modern game.Tensions run high, adrenaline shoots upwards and almost a billion eyes are glued to TV and mobile screens whenever India and Pakistan face each other on the cricket field. And if it is at a World Cup, it’s even more mouth-watering than any other scheduled fixture. While India hold a dominant 6-0 win-loss record against their neighbours in World Cups, Pakistan are still way ahead with 73 victories to India’s 54, when it comes to the overall ODI record against each other. The 2 teams first met in a World Cup during the 1992 edition and till 2015, we have seen 6 engrossing contests between the two fierce rivals. Here is a quick recap of these clashes which have defined the World Cup rivalry between the teams till date:- Sydney, 1992: India won by 43 runs9 years after they had won their maiden World Cup, India faced Pakistan for the 1st time on the sport’s biggest stage. The match was dotted with some impressive performances from Ajay Jadeja and Sachin Tendulkar who scored 46 and 54* respectively to push India’s total to 216/7. That Pakistan fell short in their pursuit was largely thanks to Javed Miandad’s snail-paced 40 off 110 balls as they kept losing wickets in order to up the ante. One of the highlights of the match was Miandad jumping up and down trying to mimic Kiran More as the stumper kept bugging him with his own choice of words.advertisement- Bengaluru, 1996: India won by 39 runsIndia found the unlikeliest of heroes in opener Navjot Singh Sidhu, who scored 93, and Venkatesh Prasad (3/45) as they restricted Pakistan to 248/9 after scoring an impressive 287/8. That India were able to post a big total was largely due to a late assault from Ajay Jadeja off the bowling of Waqar Younis, carting him away for 40 runs in his last couple of overs. In what was a quarter-final, a charged-up Prasad uprooting Aamer Sohail’s off-stump, after being sledged and hit for a boundary on the previous ball, has now been etched into the memory of every Indian cricket fan.- Manchester, 1999: India won by 47 runsThe Kargil War acted as the perfect backdrop as tensions ran high when the 2 teams met each other at the same ground where they will play a day later. Prasad, once again proved his World Cup credentials by picking up a 5-for to skittle Pakistan for 180 after India huffed and puffed on their way to 227/6, helped by dogged half-centuries from Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin.- Centurion, 2003: India won by 6 wicketsSachin Tendulkar couldn’t have timed his best World Cup knock better even if he wanted to as his blazing 98 off 75 balls blew Pakistan away in a glorious display of ball-striking ability. Pakistan would have thought of breaking their World Cup hoodoo against India after they posted 273/7 helped by Saeed Anwar’s 20th ODI century. But from the time Sachin uppercut Shoaib Akhtar for a six over third-man, Pakistan’s dreams came swiftly crashing down to earth.- Mohali, 2011: India won by 29 runsTendulkar was once again at the forefront by scoring a vital 85 helping his team to 260/9 after Wahab Riaz bowled a searing spell picking up 5 wickets. But the pressure of the chase meant Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals with Misbah-ul-Haq (56) playing a lone hand. What made the victory taste even sweeter was that India now had reached the final where they beat Sri Lanka to lift the trophy after a long wait of 28 years.- Adelaide, 2015: India won by 76 runsAs if it was destined to be, the baton of shouldering India’s batting passed on from Sachin to Virat Kohli, who became the 1st from his country to hit a century against their arch-rivals in a World Cup match. Kohli’s 107 propelled India to 300/7 even though Sohail Khan picked a sensational 5-for. In reply, Pakistan were troubled by the bounce and pace of Mohammed Shami, who took 4 wickets including that of veterans Younis Khan, Misbah and Shahid Afridi to break the back of their batting.Come June 16, (and rain permitting) it doesn’t matter whether it’s 7-0 or 6-1, you are bound to answer ‘yes’ to the question: Are you not entertained? Also Read | World Cup 2019: Recent history suggests India firm favourites vs PakistanAlso Read | World Cup 2019: Why India are outright favourites against Pakistanadvertisement

Everlane Wants You to Have a Daily Uniform to Make Dressing Easier The Mission Workshop Khyte Sets a New Standard for Messenger Bags Learn Guitar (and Don’t Give Up) With the Fender Play App Patagonia Goes 100% Sustainable with New Line Called Shell, Yeah! REI’s Gear Rental Program Will Change How You Experience the Outdoors Editors’ Recommendations It’s almost impossible to know who makes the clothes we buy and that’s largely a deliberate choice by retailers. Most stores offering low prices understand that if consumers knew the working conditions and pay of the people who made that $9 button-down, people likely wouldn’t buy it. Sadly, even high-end clothing stores have questionable manufacturing practices in developing nations. Patagonia, the famed outdoor clothing and gear retailer, chose to change things by becoming a part of Fair Trade USA.Patagonia is fairly famous already for providing incredible quality of life for its employees, so it’s hardly a surprise that this concern for healthy, happy lives extends to the people who manufacture their products. The team at the company tasked with ensuring environmental and social responsibility vets the factories Patagonia considers employing, working with Fair Trade USA to ensure the factories adhere to International Fair Trade standards. These standards include stipulations about providing living wages, safe working conditions, and employee empowerment–all rare considerations among most garment producers. Not all their factories are overseas– they have a factory in Los Angeles, which sews and prints their organic cotton t-shirts and is a great example of their commitment to transparency. On their website, they provide detailed information about the factory, including issues they found during an audit and an update on the needed changes now being made.Essentially Patagonia pays a premium for every item they offer that is Fair Trade certified. That money goes straight to the workers of the factory and it’s up to the employees to decide how to spend it. According to the company, between 2014 and 2016, the workers who are a part of their Fair Trade initiative have earned an additional $430,000 in wages, which was spent on anything from educational costs to creating a child care program at the factory. In the years since Patagonia began working with Fair Trade USA, they have steadily expanded the styles offered through the program. In 2014, 10 Fair Trade styles were offered, all of which were made in one factory. A mere two years later, Patagonia offers 192 Fair Trade options across three categories: Men’s, Women’s, and Children’s clothing. These items are made in six different factories and, by 2017, the company hopes to offer 300 styles, expanding their Fair Trade factories to 13. That is a remarkable amount of lives transformed: about 7,000 in fact. Some of the Fair Trade Certified options include the Patagonia classic Better Sweater Fleece Jacket, which is about $139. Not bad when you consider the opportunities for education and economic advancement in developing nations that your decision to keep yourself warm provides. Their durable, long-lasting and versatile Men’s Cords are also certified and are only $89. You can find the full line of Fair Trade Certified options here.If you’d like to learn more and meet some of the people who make Patagonia’s clothes who have benefited from consumers choosing Fair Trade products, you can watch Patagonia’s trailer.
Nova Scotia’s aerospace and defence industry is soaring. Today, May 4, Premier Darrell Dexter congratulated several Nova Scotia organizations ranked among the top Canadian aerospace and defence companies by the Canadian Defence Review Magazine. Irving Shipbuilding Inc. ranks first, while General Dynamics Canada, L-3 Communications, CAE, Lockheed Martin, and Bluedrop Performance Learning Inc., are among the top 18 companies of 50 ranked across Canada. “Congratulations to these great companies, and their workers, that have put Nova Scotia on the map, while further signalling the growth and success of the province’s aerospace and defence sector,” said Premier Dexter. “We are proud of these companies and their employees. They should all be honoured by this achievement, especially Irving, as the first shipyard to have received the top ranking.” Nova Scotia’s aerospace and defence sector continues to represent a large and important piece of the province’s economy, employing about 6,000 highly skilled workers and generating $600 million annually for Nova Scotia’s gross domestic product. The province’s commitment to the sector is demonstrated through a $10-million investment for the Aerospace and Defence Fund through jobsHere and the recent investment of $1.7 million in Bluedrop’s $2.3-million defence training and simulation centre. The centre is the first of its kind in Canada, and will create more than 30 jobs. “Investments like these, and Irving’s win of the federal shipbuilding contract, will help the province turn the corner on 20 years of slow economic growth in Atlantic Canada,” said Premier Dexter. “The federal shipbuilding contract alone will create thousands of jobs for Nova Scotians, and billions in economic spinoffs over the next 30 years, money that can be reinvested in important public services like health and education.” Canadian Defence Review is Canada’s leading defence and military journal, which bases its annual ranking on factors like economic impact, innovation, contribution to the nation’s security, and support of Canada’s military. Asked if Notley’s move will spur the federal government to get more aggressive on the project, Trudeau repeated that the pipeline will be built.“What I have been very clear about is that this project is in the national interest and it will get built,” he said in Regina. “The role of the federal government is to watch out and ensure that the national interest is always protected and promoted. That is what I will continue to do. We will continue to ensure that we are protecting the environment while growing the economy and working across the country to ensure the projects that are in the national interest – like the Kinder Morgan pipeline – move forward.”Notley said Thursday that Alberta’s key focus is to get people’s attention about what is at stake. She said the pipeline is economically vital to the province and to the rest of Canada, and the country is already forgoing thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in lost revenue due to pipeline bottlenecks. The Trudeau government approved the Kinder Morgan project in 2016, but the pipeline has since faced permit fights and challenges from the B.C. government. The $7.9-billion expansion would triple the amount of Alberta crude going from Edmonton to the port in Burnaby. REGINA, S.K. — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the dispute between B.C. and Alberta over the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion isn’t the first time provinces have disagreed on a project.Trudeau says there have been many times where provinces have taken what he calls “different perspectives” on a proposal. He says it’s important that the federal government show leadership to make sure the national interest is served.Alberta Premier Rachel Notley is threatening to expand a fight with B.C. over Kinder Morgan’s pipeline by reducing the amount of oil her province ships. The pipeline dispute began earlier this year when B.C. said it would not allow increased bitumen shipments until it could do more research on pipeline safety and spill response.
