Guiao on being permanent PH coach: ‘If they give it to me formally, I will accept it’

If our goal is the World Cup and we don’t make it, as coach, you should resign.”Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next “These guys play through cut foreheads and bleeding noses and show up even with their wives pregnant (at home),” said Guiao. “What kind of a hardship would it be for me to leave them? What kind of a person would I be if I do that?”There even won’t be any need for long-drawn negotiations.“We are not talking about money anyway,” he said. “(SBP officials) just told us to play, to coach, and they did not promise us anything. We just want to be of service (to the country).”Ryan Gregorio, who is a scout for the national team, said Guiao’s effect on the national program is evident. The talent depth of the national pool has expanded exponentially since he took over the reins on an interim basis.“The only problem with coach Yeng is a great problem,” Gregorio said. “Everybody wants to play for him. Marcio (Lassiter) had his forehead cut open in the game against Iran. When we flew back here, he had it stitched immediately so he can play against Qatar.”ADVERTISEMENT Carpio hits red carpet treatment for China Coast Guard PLAY LIST 02:14Carpio hits red carpet treatment for China Coast Guard02:56NCRPO pledges to donate P3.5 million to victims of Taal eruption00:56Heavy rain brings some relief in Australia02:37Calm moments allow Taal folks some respite03:23Negosyo sa Tagaytay City, bagsak sa pag-aalboroto ng Bulkang Taal01:13Christian Standhardinger wins PBA Best Player award Cold-shooting Philippines turns to defense in win over Qatar Lights inside SMX hall flicker as Duterte rants vs Ayala, Pangilinan anew Phivolcs: Slim probability of Taal Volcano caldera eruption LATEST STORIES Nadine Lustre’s phone stolen in Brazil Allen Durham still determined to help Meralco win 1st PBA title Japeth Aguilar embraces role, gets rewarded with Finals MVP plum Tim Cone, Ginebra set their sights on elusive All-Filipino crown Lights inside SMX hall flicker as Duterte rants vs Ayala, Pangilinan anew Gov’t to employ 6,000 displaced by Taal Gretchen Barretto’s daughter Dominique graduates magna cum laude from California college There is no other coach in the horizon that would be a suitable successor to Reyes’ post. An armored battery you can swallow

first_imgEvery year, more than 3000 children in the United States visit the emergency room after swallowing button batteries, which power anything from toys to calculators. Once inside the throat, the flat, round power sources release caustic chemicals that can severely burn the esophagus, causing internal bleeding and even death. Now, scientists have found a simple solution: an armor that renders these batteries harmless inside the gut. When a battery is ingested, it reacts with intestinal fluids to generate an electrical current and release hydroxide, a caustic ion that can severely damage gut tissue within just a few hours. So bioengineers took advantage of the fact that batteries experience a gentle pressure inside their housing, but not so much inside the digestive tract. They coated button batteries with a quantum tunneling composite, a rubberlike material made of silicone embedded with metal particles. Normally, the metal particles are too far apart to conduct electricity. But when the particles are compressed within a few nanometers of one another, the electrons burrow through the silicone through a process called quantum tunneling, turning the composite from an insulator into a conductor. The researchers calibrated the coating such that an armored button battery would function normally inside devices, but lose its conductivity inside the digestive tract. To test their design, the scientists placed a conventional button battery and a coated one inside a living pig’s esophagus. In vitro monitoring revealed that the conventional battery immediately began releasing hydroxide, as shown in the video, whereas the coated battery remained intact, leaving no trace of damage. Because the coating is waterproof, it could also be used to make weather-resistant batteries suited for outdoor use, the researchers report online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.last_img read more
